Owning a pet in New York can be confusing. Whether you are a novice or a long-time pet owner, there are so many things you need to know. What are the laws regarding your pet? How can you find a good veterinarian? Where is the nearest dog run? Finding the answers can be daunting. Laws:

  • All dogs must have a current license.
    New York State Residents: Click here to get a dog license application.
  • All dogs and cats must be vaccinated regularly against rabies.
  • All dogs must be on a six foot leash (or shorter) in public.
  • All dog owners must clean up their pets' waste (pooper scooper law).
  • It is illegal to abandon a companion animal. Contact your local shelter to relinquish a pet.
  • Neglecting an animal's care or harming an animal is a crime! Intentionally harming
    a companion animal is a felony in New York State.

Lost or Stray Animals:

The Center for Animal Care and Control (CACC) is the only organization in New York City that picks up lost or stray animals. It also accepts found animals, and owners can call looking for lost pets.
